History
The idea of establishing a new society focused on proteinopathies originated in 2018 during the International Symposium on Pathomechanisms of Amyloid Diseases, held in Miami on December 20-21. The development of this idea took an unusually long period of about five years, largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other factors. Ultimately, the International Society for Proteinopathies (ISP) was founded and incorporated in Florida, USA, on February 5, 2024. On February 22, 2024, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS, Department of the Treasury, USA) granted an exemption to the society from paying Federal Income tax under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3), effective from its incorporation date, allowing donors in the USA to deduct their contributions under IRC Section 170.
